Today, Tuesday, March 1, 2011, Asher Brown would have celebrated his 14th birthday.
But, the day will be a solemn one for Asher's parents. Four students bullied Asher, a student at Hamilton Middle School outside of Houston, Texas. Asher's parents say they filed numerous complaints, but school officials did nothing.
On the day before Asher's suicide in September 2010, students reported that a bully tripped Asher down a flight of stairs. The following day Asher shot himself at home. Asher's parents will bring their son's emotional story to EQTX Lobby Day on March 7.
Common sense solutions to address bullying can be found in CSHB 224. State Rep. Mark Strama of Austin is the author of CSHB 224. It has been scheduled for a public hearing in the House Committee on Public Education today, Tuesday, March 1, the same day Asher would have turned 14 years old. We plan to share Asher's story with lawmakers during the hearing.
Rep. Strama's bill would provide educators and school administrators with comprehensive tools to stop bullying. Click here for more information about CSHB 224. State Senator Wendy Davis of Fort Worth is the author of CSSB 242. CSSB 242 has been referred to the Senate Committee on Education. This bill is identical to CSHB 224 and provides for parental notification and the ability to transfer a bully to another classroom.
EQTX Lobby Day - Katy Stewart, EQTX board member, shared her story about why she will come to Lobby Day on March 7. This is your time to have face-to-face conversations with those elected to represent you.

The school & all of their so called officials just sweep the complaints under the rug & ignore you if they can get away with it... Don't let them ignore you, Your childs life depends on it !!!
